It seems like a lot of men want to be able to get away with things and treating us a certain way…But how come when we do it back, it’s suddenly wrong? If a man wants to be treated right, shouldn’t he treat his woman right? What’s with the double standard…Why is it ok for a man to be certain way in the relationship and not the woman? At the risk of sounding like I’m defending my gender, I will say there are women who seem to think the same way. It is probably more common for men to have this attitude than women, however.

Part of it is the attitude and acceptance by the other person in the relationship. If you tolerate his behaving that way it is an incentive for him to go on with it. Or if I tolerated it from my wife or other partner it would reinforce their behavior. Some men learn this from watching the way their parents act.

My mother was the stronger person among my parents. My father was inclined to just accept things–Mom wanted to change them. So I tend to be a little more democratic (note the little "D", please) in my relationship with my wife.

In both of my marriages I have tried to treat my women right. My first wife took full advantage of that. My second and current wife tends to be a lot more pushy than I would like but other than that she is reasonably fair in our relationship. I don’t demand very much.

Everything in my life has led to me believe they are very similar, and it is society that causes such huge differences. Of course, women and men have different genitalia, and men are natrually physically stronger than women (or more able to be).

But aside from that, there is little difference. There are assertive men and assertive women, sensitive men and sensitive women etcetcetc. The mass media publicises ideas of men as sporty, career-driven and into sex, beer, football, and women as obsessed with fashion, beauty and relationships.

I mean, how are blue and pink actually signifiers of gender? They mean nothing but what tradition has decided, and nor, I think, do the other qualities society gives men and women.

It is difficult to see what we would be like without the influence of societies. We have had somewhat different roles because of biological differences. The sex of a person is becoming less important than their mental abilities. I think it would be boring if we were all of the same sex. And there were were no differences. We are all human beings we are more alike than different.

Do you think its because of the chase? You always want what you cant have?

Is it because women think men in relationships are a "good catch" and therefore try to become better than their current girlfriend?

If we can’t ignore them due to professional purposes or whatever, we’ll act considerate on a business level but still keep pretty distant personally and act somewhat passive-aggressive.
