Statistics point to that being the truth in recent decades. I happen to know it from experience. Fortunately, I was a strong and independent man, so I left her and took custody of our son.

Women cheat too. They just do it better and don’ t get caught as often as men do. Women cheated back in the 50’s too, and well before that. It has nothing to do with working.

I am not sure that women didn’t cheat in the 1950’s – certainly there was less opportunity but it still went on. However, studies carried out in the 1970’s revealed that a great many men were unknowingly raising children with their wives when these children were not theirs (i.e. women had lover). I think that women are just more discreet than men because as you say, they value what they have in the home and it is more about feeling nice about themselves than it is wanting to hurt anyone…but thats probably naive of me!

Lets not generalize women into being these perfectly behaved little people who only thought of family and house work. The truth is more likely that women were and are often just better at hiding it.

In one way it’s nature… if you can’t work to support yourself…be with the guy who can support a family, and mate with the one that holds the better genes.

A radio station some years ago here always had a morning trivia type game in which people had to call in and guess what the answer was. One morning it was "what women tend to do sooner than men"…the answer was cheat.

Edit: Hell, we found out a couple summers ago that it seems that a family friend "uncle" from a while back is probably actually my mothers real biological grandfather…and we’re talking 1914 that my grandfather’s mother would have been messing around with him. She mysteriously died by "accident" when my grandfather was 9, so we kind of wonder if her husband figured out what she did because my grandfather seems to have looked just "uncle Bill."

yes i do,why?women nowadays like to experiment alot so they go out side to get the feeling of something that they plan to do ,but some get caught up and can’t stop, but man shouldn’t be angry cause they started the whole thing so now they have to deal with i.

Statistics suggest that women are gaining on men in their infidelity.

Are they just more willing to admit to it?

One point to be remembered about such studies: whenever people are asked their number of sexual partners, the women’s mean number is always lower than the men’s. Now, that’s a mathematical impossibility. Men are exaggerating, women are underestimating, or (probably) both.

The same could be true with infidelity.

Assuming women do cheat more, is this a matter of opportunity? Working outside the home? A matter of less social stigma? Is feminism partially to blame? Is cheating seen by some as "liberated", an "entitlement", or striking a blow against the "double-standard"? Or just our society being generally over sexualized?

yeah in the past it was seen as OK for men to cheat….I agree that cheating was seen as something women didnt do….but not becuase womencame up with that idea, it was probably men trying to feel secure abt their own manhood and attractiveness….women have always been punished more harshly for adultery, and were seen as the faithful ones. Men were seen as "naturally poly-amourous" and basically they still are-they get more of a license to cheat…..I dont know where u got the idea that men got ticked off for cheating more than women, that had never been the case! women can be stoned to death for cheating in places like pakistan, where as men are allowed more than one wife! just because women were see as the naturally monogamous ones, does not mean that men were seen as the bad guys at all, or that women were the ones that came up with that idea

TLDR. Women are less likely to cheat than men. This was always the case.

In many cultures it was quite acceptable (and still is to some extent) for a man to have a wife AND a mistress. Everybody knew about it, including the wife. In some other cultures its ok for a man to have multiple wives.

There is no equivalent for women in either case because they are busy peeling the potatoes and tending to the children. They are indisposed.

Women haven’t got the time for a "mistress".

I don’t know if it’s still true, but didn’t single women used to have affairs with married men an awful lot? Maybe now married people are having affairs with each other, I don’t know.

Man, how can anyone find the time or patience for two lovers? People are indefatigable!

"In the past women didn’t cheat on their husbands. Back in the 1950s and further in the past women never cheated on their husbands. Because they valued their family and it was the most important thing in their life since they didn’t have jobs."

Interesting, but false, statement. I don’t know that women cheat as much as men, but I think it’s pretty comparable. They may cheat more, they’re just sneakier about it.

Stuff like this always happened, especially with rich people who married for convenience. Marriages were arranged many times, and plenty of queens, countesses, and other such "ladies" engaged in extramarital affairs. I think the Victorian era put an end to that for a brief period of time, but now, it’s on again….

Hmm. One question. If only men were unfaithful in the 1950’s, who exactly was it that they were being unfaithful with?
a. wife next door
b. single girl employed at the office
c. widow down the street
d. prostitute

Choose carefully, as three of these will invalidate your argument.

I think society has changed – look at the media, desperate housewives, sex in the city – casual sex and not being married preoperly have become fashionable.

You are ‘having fun’ if you are having just casual sex or affairs.

When I got married my girflfriends said ‘Oh, but don’t you want to ‘have fun’??’ Society has lead people to bleive that that way of life is boring.

I don’t think it’s women trying to get even with men like follow the leader, just what is now socially acceptable.
