However, a common law marriage isn't the result of just "living" together there is often criteria, such as filing an income tax from together, and referring to each other as husband and wife. Common law marriage is not available or recognized in all states. Men in marriages aren't slaves and neither are women. Sure, some husbands and some wives treat their spouse like sh*t, but that is not the case for all couples. Some spouses really have egalitarian relationships, where they love and value each other for what they do in the marriage/relationship and what they do outside of it (Work, hobbies). Lastly, yes character is important and why would you marry someone whose character you didn't know? Women don't have degrees in male psychology either. You can judge someone's character by spending time with them, watching/observing them and listening to them.
